CHILE CAMP PARTICULARS
Where is the camp located? Nomad Ski Academy offers its summer camps in the heart of the magnificent Andes Mountains, the largest and most majestic ski domain in South America. While August is a warm summer mont in North America, it is a beautiful winter month in Chile. El Colorado, where you will train, is located 1.5 hours by road from Santiago's international airport.
You will stay at one of the hotels or Refugios of El Colorado-Farellones, depending on the package you chose. How is the weather in El Colorado in August? It's the winter season with an average temperature of between -10°C (14°F) and +5°C (41°F). All runs are usually open on the mountain at this time of year. Can I room with my friends? We do our best to accomodate camp participants of the same gender who wish to share a room.
How far away are lifts from the hotel? Some apartments are a just few steps from the lifts whereas others are a short shuttle ride away. Either way, getting to the lifts is easy. How much money should I bring? In what currency? When you attend an all-inclusive camp, a total of US$50 per week is more than enough. If your camp does not include lunch, you should plan on bringing an additional US$20 for each day of your stay.
Also, if it is the first time you travel to Chile with your current passport, you will be required to pay the airport tax in the amount of US$136 (for Canadians), or, US$136 (for Americans). You will pay this tax only once for the duration of your current passport.
For pocket money while staying at El Colorado, it is recommended that you convert your US Dollars into Chilean Pesos at the Santiago airport. How can I phone home from camp? To call someone in Canada, you must go through a Canadian operator. Simply dial:
Once you have reached an operator, you can reverse the charges or use you Canadian calling card. How can I contact a camper at camp? Prior to departure, we will provide you with the phone number for the accomodations where the camp participant will be staying. To find out which local establishments provide internet services and/or computers, please contact our staff on site. How should I prepare myself for the change in altitude? The altitude is approximately 3,000 metres / 9,843 ft. above sea level.
In order to minimize the risk of headaches, fatigue and dehydration caused by a long flight and the change in altitude, you should follow these suggestions:
TWO DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE - drink plenty of fluids (water, mineral water, fruit juices, but not soft drinks (pop, soda); eat primarily carbo-hydrates (pasta, bread, cereal, fruits and vegetables) at meals and snacktime; DURING THE FLIGHT - drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine and processed sugars (such as chocolate and other sweets). What's the food like? Good quality, good variety. Breakfast and dinner buffets are served up at the hotel. Lunch is served at the ski resort cafeteria or provided at the hotel. What about electricity? Standard electrical service in Chile is 220 Volts. If you bring electrical equipment (battery chargers, razor, computer, etc.), you will need a 220V to 110V converter, or, a plug adaptor if your electrical device is dual-voltage. |
